GOVERNMENT WORKERS AND TEACHERS RECEIVE 20 PERCENT
SALARY INCREASE
The accord that was reached on Saturday between the Government and the
Teachers and Government Workers Unions has resulted in a 20 percent salary
increase plus an extra 30.000 per month for the first quarter. The Government
will take care of the income tax and SZF contributions for this period.
Parties will meet again around the middle of March to continue negotiations
over the 100 percent salary increase for 1998, the SZF question, the position
of those on pension and the income tax regulations.
RATE FOR THE US DOLLAR CONTINUES TO RISE
The rate for the US dollar is on its way to sf 1000.00 Yesterday the illegal
money vendors sold the dollar for 900.00 and it is expected that the magical
figure of 1000.00 will soon be reached and passed in the near future.The
Dutch guilder was sold for 460.00. At the cambios and local banks the rates
were much lower the dollar was sold for 755 theDutch guilder 385 and the
French Francs 129. According to money vendors the rise in the rates is
the result of the accord that was reached between the Government and the
Unions.
STINASU SIGNS FINANCIAL AGREEMENT WITH WORLD WILDLIFE
FUNDS
The StiNaSu (Institute for nature conservation) has signed a financial
agreement with the World Wildlife Funds (WWF) for an amount of US 430.000
for a period of 3 years. This sum is to be used for the Brownsberg Nature
Park and the Galibi nature resort. 42 percent of the amount will be used
for equipment and 35 percent will be used to attract specialists for the
necessary development in the biological sector. It is the goal of the Stinasu
to set up buildings for Stinasu personnel so that they could do a more
efficient job and also to create new paths and mountain trails.
DAMAGES INSIDE EDUCATIVE SECTOR LIMITED
Even though the educative sector has suffered from the recent Teachers
actions, efforts are being made to save the shool year. The Ministry of
Education (MINOV) together with parents, teachers and students will work
to find a way to work in theback log Schematic plans will be made and presented
to the schools.
ASSEMBLY'S CHAIRMAN TRIES TO SET UP MEETING ON THURSDAY
Marijke Djawalpersad will try to set up a meeting of the National Assembly
on Thursday. This is Djawalapersaud"s seventh effort to try to get the
Assembly's members together to start discussion on the MOP and other pending
matters.When asked about what she thought of Chas Mijnals, who is at present
Advisor of the President, being tipped for the new ambassador's post in
India, Djawalapersad replied that she was not informed about this. She
stated that at the beginning of the Coalition formation two and a half
years ago, it was suggested that the post would be filled by someone out
of the BVD. At that time Narain Gangaram Panday and Waldo Ramdihal were
presented for the post. Djawalapersad was not aware if this question was
discussed at the convent that was held yesterday.
