MINISTER OF EDUCATION ASKS FOLS TO RECONSIDER AND END ACTIOS

Minister of Education Karan Ramsundersingh has asked the FOLS to reconsider and put an end to their action at a meeting that was held yesterday. The FOLS are willing to consider this request and will reply at a later date. According to Robby Naarendorp, Chairman of the FOLS, the Minister has also proposed to evaluate the situation in the educative sector. Naarendorp has criticized the Ministry for the measures takenagainst the protesting teachers and has demanded that they be immediately revoked. He reported that the actions will however continue for the time being because the Ministry has so far not taken into effect the number of points that was presented to them by the FOLS in the past. The meeting planned for today will still take place. The Minister was asked to explain the reasons for mutations involving the teachers to which he replied that they should not be considered mutations but transfers of teachers to shools where no teachers were available. The FOLS then suggested that in that case the situtation be brought back to its original state. It has already been six weeks since the teachers have begun their protesting campagne against the government and now with the upcoming Xmas Holidays they have planned another type of action of attending shool until 11 am every day after which they report ill and go home. Considering the major set backs this will have on the school children, parents are not in favor of these actions of the teachers who in their opinion ought to be a bit more considerate towards our young Surinamers.
